I live in the Valley

I live in Encino, so the San Fernando Valley is the part of Los Angeles I know from the inside: the 101 at five o’clock, the business parks off the major boulevards, the family companies that have been in Van Nuys for decades. My office is in Santa Monica, and sessions happen there when a team comes to me. Most Valley teams would rather I come to them, which is easy from here.

What the Valley makes and sells

The Valley runs on the kind of businesses that don’t get written about. Construction and trade contractors. Manufacturers and distributors in Van Nuys and out toward Chatsworth. Aviation businesses around the Van Nuys airport. Medical groups, law firms, insurance agencies and wealth managers along Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, Encino and Woodland Hills. Calabasas adds finance, real estate and a handful of corporate offices.

Construction and manufacturing are the two figures up top for a reason. In both, the owner is usually still the best estimator, the best salesperson, or the person who can fix the machine, and the company has grown up around that fact. It is the most common dependency problem I see, and EOS is well suited to it.

What EOS looks like in a Valley company

The tools are the same everywhere. In a contractor or a manufacturer they tend to land in a particular order.

The Accountability Chart usually shows the owner sitting in operations, sales and finance at once. The Scorecard pulls job costing, backlog and cash out of the owner’s head and onto one page the team reviews every week. Rocks turn the big fixes, a second estimator, a real production schedule, a controller from outside the family, into ninety-day commitments with one name on each.

The weekly Level 10 Meeting is where the change shows. Ninety minutes, same day, same time, same agenda, and it ends with issues solved. A team that used to wait for the owner to walk the floor starts making the call itself, and the owner starts to find out which decisions only they can make. There are fewer of those than most owners expect.

Over the hill

From Santa Monica the Sepulveda Pass is the part of the day I plan around. Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks and Encino are the near end of the Valley, and Woodland Hills and Calabasas sit a little farther west along the 101. Sessions start on time either way.

Valley questions

Will you come to our office in Van Nuys or Woodland Hills?

Yes. Valley sessions are usually at the client's office. I live in Encino, so anywhere in the Valley is close.

Do you work out of the Valley?

No. My office is in Santa Monica. Living in Encino keeps the Valley close, but sessions happen at your office, in Santa Monica, or over video, never at my house.

Do you work with contractors and manufacturers?

Yes. They are some of the best fits for EOS, because the owner is so often still doing the most skilled work in the company. The process moves that work into seats other people can own.

What about professional firms in Sherman Oaks and Calabasas?

Same process, different pressure points. In a law firm, medical group or wealth manager, the Accountability Chart usually gets hardest where several partners share ownership of one function.
